Local Authorities and Woodfuel Installation

Paul Barker (Bristol City Council) and Jim Gillon (Sunderland City Council)
With the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) coming into effect in 2010, the Climate Change Levy (CCL) and the latest Energy and Planning White Papers the financial and legislative pressure is on local authorities to reduce carbon and become more sustainable. Wood fuel can be the most economical and practical solution. This workshop presents two case studies of successful implementation in local authorities - including issues and pitfalls, and lessons learned by the authorities themselves.

District Heating Systems

Robert Shaw (Faber Maunsell) and Gavin Gulliver-Goodall (Econergy)
District heating is a favoured system on the continent but what are the realities of such a project in the UK? Which sites suit district heating? New-build or retro-fit - how can it work? What are the practicalities of planning, delivering and running schemes? How do heat metering schemes work? These questions and many more will be addressed in this workshop.

Woodfuel Suppliers Master Class

Neil Bond (RES Group), Mike Ingoldby (Bowland Bioenergy) and chaired by John Farquhar (Rural Development Initiatives and Ignite Woodfuel training course instructor)
This workshop will look at a wide range of factors related to woodfuel supply. How do you turn woody biomass into quality fuel products and deliver it to a boiler effectively and efficiently? It is vital that you give customers confidence and assurance - how to do this? How do wood fuel supply contracts work? This workshop is aimed primarily at those in the woodfuel sector, and the emphasis will be on sharing experience and discussing the issues.

Calculating Whole Life Costs of Biomass Systems

Steve Luker (Steve Luker Associates)
You’re thinking of installing a nice new woodfuel system, now what is it going to cost you to keep it running efficiently? How does it compare to a fossil fuel system? This workshop aims to highlight the costs of keeping wood fuel systems working efficiently and demonstrate how spending more on the installation can result in significant lifecycle savings.

Specifying Woodfuel Boilers

Glyn Edwards (Black & Veatch)
When specifying woodfuel systems there are fundamental differences to fossil fuel boilers which need to be considered. The differences and their importance will be explained in this workshop along with general principles involved in specifying a high quality and highly efficient woodfuel system.

Woodfuel and the Planning System - dispelling the myths and working with the system

Richard Harvey (Rural Energy) and David Maunder (RES Group and chairman of the North East Biomass Forum)
Woodfuel installations have different requirements when it comes to planning consent and you need to be aware of these requirements and what information you need when approaching your planning authority. However, new planning legislation is on your side as it actively encourages woodfuel to help the UK meet its sustainability and carbon reduction targets. So planning consent should not stop a project, but you do need to know how to present it to the planners, and this workshop will provide all the information you need.

Buyers Guide to Woodfuel

Ben Tansey (Wood Energy Ltd)
This workshop covers the basics of choosing woodfuel. Why type, quantity and quality are so important and how equipment choice is affected by what fuel you have available. Planning ahead for fuel supply is an essential part of planning a wood fuel installation. This workshop will give you guidance on all these issues and more.

Financial and Legislative Incentives for Woodfuel

Keiran Allen (The Carbon Trust) and Lisa Beardmore (AEA Technology)
Reducing carbon emissions and building renewable energy capacity in the UK are important governments targets. There are already a range of financial incentives and regulations in place to help move towards these targets and more are planned for the near future. As a potential user of biomass-based energy, it is important to know therefore, what support financial support could be available. This workshop will cover all the key information about the financial incentives for wood fuel, from the perspective of those looking to install or purchase heating and or power equipment.

Energy Service Companies (ESCo)

Nick Burchett (Dalkia Ltd)
There's no getting away from the fact that the initial cost of wood fuel systems is higher than their fossil fuel equivalents, and this can be a barrier to some organisations. One option can be to use an ESCo. This enables you to eliminate, or reduce, the initial cost and just pay for the energy you use. There are many possible options and structures for an ESCo agreement, and these will be explained in this workshop.
